LGBTQIA+ is an umbrella term that refers to a wide range of sexual and gender identities including but not limited to lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer or questioning, intersex, asexual or ally, and plus to include additional identities. 1 A 2017 Gallup Poll estimated that around 4% or 10 million Americans identify as LGTBQIA+. 2

Description: The National LGBTQ Cancer Network provides a rich and in-depth webinar, toolkit and guidebook tailored specifically for providers. This guidebook has been recognized and promoted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as a means of reducing barriers for LGBTQ access to services.

Useful Resources Include:

  • The Toolkit – An online list of Power Points that give an introductory overview of concepts of intersectionality, LGBTQ health disparities and other relevant subjects. You must complete the workshop in order to gain access to the toolkit.
  • The Guide – Here is an open-access PDF guide that is concise, informative and visually appealing. Goals of the PDF are to increase knowledge of LGBT health and social service needs and develop LGBTQ-affirming behavior and attitudes.
  • The Workshop – This sophisticated curriculum was initially designed for 38,000 employees in healthcare services in New York and has been further updated since then. This training can be tailored specifically for your organization and can range from a single hour to a full day training.

Human Rights Campaign

Benchmark of LGTBQ Cultural Competency Checklist

Description: Human Rights Campaign offers a 10 step checklist that service providers can utilize to determine organizational LGBTQ cultural competence. Providers can become accredited through Human Rights Campaign, receive a designation of “Leaders in Supporting and Serving LGBTQ Youth & Families,” and be awarded the Seal of Recognition.
